Senior Writer
We are one of the leading tech-driven media and entertainment companies, producing uplifting content in 17 languages for audiences of all ages. Known for the award-winning digital publisher boredpanda.com and the Crafty Panda DIY channel, we fight the world’s boredom at scale - reaching 160 million site views per month and 62 billion video views per year. Our team consists of around 350 creative professionals from 36 countries, with 2 offices in Vilnius, Lithuania.
As a Senior Writer for Spike, you will translate our world and characters into engaging stories, setting the comedic voice for the room and ensuring every script is visually funny, age-appropriate, and true to character. Acting as both a senior writer and editor, you will craft original scripts, tackle rewrites, and provide constructive feedback on submissions from fellow writers.
What You Will Do:
Create stories that land one complete comedic idea (setup, escalation, payoff) inside a 3-5 minute runtime; a strong single gag or premise per episode;
Turn the show’s world/character guidelines into a writers’ room voice built for fast, visual, 3-5 minute storytelling;
Take data-driven or trend-informed topics, however they’re sourced, and shape them into episode premises that feel like organic, entertaining stories;
Write and rewrite scripts that lead with visual gags, physical comedy, and visual escalation;
Set and protect a “travels anywhere” bar on every script: humor and stories that land the same for a kid in Brazil, Japan, or Norway, with minimal reliance on wordplay, idiom, or culture-specific references;
Give fast, clear notes on other writers’ scripts and keep revisions moving at a pace that matches Spike’s YouTube release cadence (6-8 episodes per month), not a traditional broadcast schedule;
Partner with the creative director/showrunner, board artists, and (if applicable) child development consultants to keep humor age-appropriate, visually clear, and production-ready;
Maintain continuity across a high volume of episodes: character voice, world rules, running gags, callback jokes;
Keep the writing pipeline on schedule and flag risks early - digital-first production runs faster and less forgivingly than a traditional TV season.
What We Expect:
Produced writing credits on at least one preschool (2–6) or children’s (6–11) animated series. Experience in digital-first or fast-turnaround formats is a strong plus;
True mastery of visual comedy as your primary tool, not a secondary skill: you think in visual gags, physical timing, and staging first, dialogue second, and can land a joke that needs zero subtitles;
Fluency in tight, fast comedic structure. Be able to build one complete, satisfying comedic beat within a 3–5-minute episode, with little room for a slow build;
An instinct for what travels: a clear sense of which humor is universal (physical comedy, visual irony, slapstick) versus language or culture specific, given Spike’s global, 1B+ view audience;
Comfortable working from data-driven or trend-informed topics (a trending search term, a viral theme) and turning them into organic stories that do not feel forced - a distinctive part of how Spike develops ideas that many experienced preschool writers won’t have run into before, so real openness here counts as much as the craft itself;
Comfort with a fast, digital-first production cadence - quicker turnarounds than a traditional broadcast season, and ease of iterating based on audience response;
Strong collaborator, used to rounds of feedback from producers, directors, and consultants;
Reliable and deadline-driven across a high-volume, fast-moving episode structure.
